Niles Grace

Heritage Estate Auction Company (www.heritageauction.biz)

Presenting Working with Knowledge

Niles GraceNiles Grace began buying and selling toy trains about 35 years ago to finance his personal collection. At the same time, Niles had a professional career as a successful commercial interior designer. Grace specialized in "theme" or period restaurants: "I was in and around these things all the time and got used to working with antiques."

Grace decided to enroll in the College for Appraisers in Southern California. "I just felt like there was a lot I didn't know. I knew a lot about furniture, toys, trains, contemporary collectibles, and some about glassware, porcelain, china. Then there were things, like jewelry, that I knew nothing about. I felt that if I could get some increased knowledge out of the experience and could make better buys, that would be fine."

Niles went farther than that, however. He ended up completing both the basic and master's certified programs in appraisal. He also taught for the college in areas he had worked with previously, collectibles and the Oriental arts, and offered specialty seminars on Native American arts and artifacts.

Niles did 19 shows as the Instant Appraiser on The Incurable Collector which appeared on A&E.

His maternal grandmother started his first collection of figural knick-knacks around that time. “I still have most of this collection,” says Kyle fondly. He had simply sent his resume to the publisher, Edward Babka, back in the summer of 1971 and he had kept it on file. When he was looking for a person to work on the expanded editorial content of the newspaper he contacted me by phone in mid-March 1972 and, “three days after our first conversation, he hired me over the phone” says Kyle. In addition, his work in writing feature articles on all types of antiques and collectibles, along with editing a wide range of price guides in these fields during the past 33 years has given Kyle a broad background on most collecting fields, ranging from the late 18th century through the 20th.
