Mega Sessions
Textiles - From Fiber to Finished Fabric
Lead by Belinda Belisle, Department Chair, Textile Department, College for Appraisers
Come and
learn, how does a fiber—sometimes as small as a hair—become the
jacket that protects you from the elements, the lace that made your
wedding dress, or the blanket that keeps you warm at night? If these
are questions that have crossed your mind, you will not want to miss
this year's Collectors' Conference.
On Saturday, June 2, the conference will highlight textiles with its Mega Session on just that, textiles and textures. You will have the opportunity to learn from such noted speakers as Theodore Theodosus—who is an award winning hairstylist and an ULTIMATE textiles collector. He will speak on California Style: the Golden State Fashion Heritage and dazzle us from his fabulous collection of period gowns. Paul Freeman—a purveyor of rare and exotic textiles will show us just what to look for in tapestries. Pamela Heiman— will share her passion and knowledge, and, love of vintage millinery; Anne Larkin — brings a wealth of information on antique and collectible buttons; and Mary DeVan - will infect you with her love of vintage lingerie.
Also highlighting the day will be a hands-on demonstration of spinning, weaving, and lace making. Joining us will be experienced craftspeople from Hedgehog Lacers, a local—Orange County, California—chapter of the International Old Lacers, Inc. Membership in this group is made up of those interested in making and preserving the old laces. They will show you how a fiber is spun from cotton and woven into a piece of cloth from which a garment or a beautiful piece of lace is made.
Bring your curiosity and your interest. Who knows, we may even find you making a piece of lace.
